NORFOLK — Back in April 2018, the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation launched a $4 million comprehensive capital campaign to enhance the trail and as of last month they’ve raised just more than $3.8 million.
The funds raised, nearly 95 percent of their Phase 1 campaign goal, will go toward adding educational opportunities, kayak launches, solar lighting, playgrounds and more, according to the foundation’s website.
To celebrate the near completion of Phase 1 and the donor that helped the trail along the way, the foundation has designed a Major Donor Sculpture.
The design was done by local artists Ellenburg and Shaffer and is inspired by the city’s “dynamic waterfront.”
It features three freestanding “sails” executed in glass and steel, officials said in the news release.
The sculpture will be on the small plot of land to the west of the Pagoda and will anchor the trail’s presence along the downtown riverfront.
Residents will be able to see the sculpture in December.
