NEWPORT NEWS — The new outpatient surgery center off City Center Boulevard is still under construction but should be finished by the fall.
“Hopefully we’ll be operating in the first quarter of next year,” said Dr. Jeffrey Carlson, president of the orthopaedic & spine center.
The approximately 57,000-square-foot building will comprise of three floors: the first, a retail space where food, clothing and other vendors can lease from the center; the second floor for medical offices, and the third floor is the outpatient surgery center.
Carlson said the surgery center will be used for orthopaedic conditions such as patients who require knee, hip, neck or lumbar surgeries.
“Patients are able to go home the same day,” he added.
By having this outpatient center separate from the hospital, Carlson said it will give patients who are “particularly sick” away from a place where there are significant infections, thereby decreasing the risk of having an infection post operation.
“This is the only center in the area to be able to perform this outpatient surgery,” Carlson said. “This center allows us to continue our innovation. This is a big project and one that the community will be able to get behind.”
Cheryl Browne, creative brand manager at the W.M. Jordan Company, said in an email construction on the medical office building started in July 2018 and is scheduled for completion in November of this year.
It is not clear how much the project costs.
Alan Leybold, administrator for the orthopaedic & spine center, described it as a “multi-million dollar project.”
When WYDaily asked for a more concrete number, Leybold said “building owners would rather not disclose.”
