NORFOLK — After their lip sync rendition video of Bruno Mars’s “Uptown Funk” went viral last summer, the Norfolk Police Department announced Tuesday they’re in the running to win $100,000 on CBS’ Lipsync to the Rescue show airing Sep. 9.

The department is among the top 30 out of more than 1,000 #LipSyncChallenge videos where first responders challenged each other via over social media to produce a lip sync performance to popular songs.

According to a news release from CBS, more than 11 million votes from the public went into choosing the top 10 which will be revealed during the broadcast.

Norfolk Police’s video which featured officers strutting through the headquarters went viral, garnering more than 1.5 million views to date and was shot with an iPhone, a stabilizer, and a boombox, “on our lunch break,” said police spokesman Daniel Hudson.

“It’s neat to be a part of the process and seeing all of the other videos,” he said. “I know what our video has done in our community, I can only imagine what impact other videos have had on others.”

Actor and comedian, Cedric the Entertainer is hosting and country music star Luke Bryan is performing on the Sep. 9 broadcast when LIVE voting via Twitter will be open to choose the top two videos — the runner-up will bag $50,000.

Norfolk is up against tough competitors including police and fire departments from Seattle, to Skokie, Illinois, and Greenville, Texas, to Saskatoon, Canada and more.

“We’re all excited about the opportunity to be part of it,” Hudson said. “Go team Norfolk.”
