NORFOLK — Here’s something: 401,438 passengers went through Norfolk International Airport in July and it’s going on record as the most served in the airport’s 81-year history.
The airport has also seen an 11.52 percent increase in travelers compared to last year with 2,286,609 served from January to July 2019, officials said.
Robert Bowen, the airport’s authority executive director, attributed the number of travelers to the combination of a thriving economy and increased airline capabilities.
And, to continue that growth, Charles Braden, a spokesman for Norfolk International Airport, said the Active Air Service Development program “connects with airlines on a continuous basis to communicate opportunities for growth in Norfolk.”
“We compete with hundreds of commercial service airports to attract increasing airline services by advocating on behalf of the community to highlight what Norfolk has to offer,” he said.
Airport officials announced Monday Allegiant Air will start nonstop service from Norfolk International to Punta Gorda/Ft. Myers Florida in November.
The airport also saw a small increase in cargo shipped from 5,007,408 pounds in July 2018 to 5,075,360 pounds in July 2019.
