NORFOLK — Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Hampton Roads and the No. 2 hospital in the state according to this year’s U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” edition.
The hospital has consistently maintained a top-three ranking in Virginia since state rankings became incorporated into the U.S. News and World Report in 2012 with their nationally ranked Ear, Nose, and Throat program in the top 50, and 10 “areas of care” in the top 10-percent in the U.S., said Carolyn Carpenter, president of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
“Year after year Sentara Norfolk General Hospital consistently delivers high-quality care and our commitment to health care excellence is evident by these rankings,” Carpenter said.
U.S. News & World Report’s “Hospital Rankings & Ratings” was designed to help “patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to seek care” and are based on a number of factors to include “patient survival,safety, and experience, nurse staffing and more,” according to its website.
For specialty care like Sentara Norfolk General’s No. 43 nationally ranked ENT program, surveys from 2017-2019 asking specialized doctors “to name up to five hospitals they consider the best for difficult cases in their specialty” were also factored in.
Out of more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated, only 165 were nationally ranked in one specialty.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is the only adult Level 1 trauma center in Hampton Roads and is home to the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance.
“This wide range of excellence means we excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients no matter their diagnosis,” Carpenter said.
