VIRGINIA BEACH — One of this city’s police K9s has died.

Rex, an interdiction dog, died Wednesday, said police spokeswoman MPO Linda Kuehn.
Kuehn said Rex and hist partner, Det. D. Kagel, began their interdiction stint in the department’s Special Investigation in October 2008.
In those 10 years, Rex and Kagel helped seize hundreds of pounds of marijuana, several kilos of cocaine and heroin as well as more than $2.6 million, Kuehn said, adding the dog received an award from the U.S Attorney’s Office.
Rex will be memorialized during the department’s annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service on May 17.
The event will be at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at 35th Street and Boardwalk.
