
James City County Police have identified a woman who was shot and killed Saturday as a 72-year-old county resident.
Irene Coates was found dead at a residence in the 200 block of Sandy Bay Road after police were called to the home for a domestic dispute, police wrote in a news release Saturday night.
Medics pronounced Coates dead at the scene.
Police took her husband, Robert Lee Coates, into custody shortly after the incident, according to the news release.
He is charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

James City County Police are releasing very few details about a shooting Saturday afternoon that left a woman dead.
“We’re not releasing anything else at this time,” said police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. authorities responded to a “dispute” in the 200 block of Sandy Bay Road.
There, police found a woman who was shot, according to a news release. The woman was later pronounced dead at the scene by medics, authorities said.
The suspect “has been detained” and there is no threat to the public at this time, police said.
It’s unclear if the victim and suspect knew each other. Police did not release their identities.
