A man died of a heart attack on a cargo ship in the James River Monday.
The ship was leaving the Port of Richmond and dropped anchor just off Jamestown Island Monday morning after a member of the crew entered cardiac arrest, said Kip Wadlow, Coast Guard spokesman.
Wadlow said the Coast Guard received a report of a medical emergency from the ship, named Balsa 92, around 10:20 a.m. The Coast Guard then informed the James City County Fire Department of the emergency.
Fire crews reached Balsa 92 before Coast Guard units arrived. They boarded the ship and attempted to resuscitate the man, James City County Fire Department Battalion Chief Al Catlett said.
“Our crews got there and found a crew member in cardiac arrest,” Catlett said. “They tried to resuscitate him and were not successful.”
“We did everything we could, but the outcome was unfortunate,” he added.
