As Hurricane Florence bears down on the East Coast, Dominion Energy is augmenting its workforce with contractors and out-of-state electric crews in preparation for mass power outages.
Crews from as far away as Texas will begin arriving in Virginia on Thursday and will be ready to get to work as soon as needed, Dominion spokeswoman Bonita Harris said Wednesday.
The combination of soggy ground and high winds could cause trees to topple during the storm, downing power lines and leading to widespread outages, Harris said. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel caused power outages that lasted for weeks, in some instances.
Harris said anyone who spots a downed power line should stay at least 30 feet away and immediately report it by calling Dominion at 866-DOM-HELP (866-366-4357).
