York County is providing a place to properly recycle chemical waste this Saturday.
From 8 a.m. to noon, residents can bring their chemicals to the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority’s household chemical collection and computer recycling event off County Drive in York.
Residents from Hampton Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County can bring paints, fuels, solvents, pesticides, automotive products and other chemicals to be recycled.
Computers are also accepted for recycling but limited to the following:
- Desktop and laptop computers
- Servers
- Monitors (both LCD and CRT types)
- Computer wiring
- Desktop printers including multifunction printers, or “all in ones”
- Fax machines
- Desktop photocopiers and scanners
- Cell phones
When bringing chemicals for recycling, a VPPSA employee will ask for information on the types of materials being recycled and which locality they’re coming from, according to VPPSA’s website. Proof of residency may be required.
Following this, an employee will direct to a work area where vehicles can be unloaded. There are separate drop-off locations for recycling chemicals and computers.
VPPSA will not accept the following materials:
- TVs
- Alkaline batteries
- Medications
- Business or medical waste
- Explosives, compressed gas cylinders
- Shock-sensitive materials
- Radioactive products
- Large quantities of unknown materials
- Ammunition
- Gunpowder
- Household trash
