Save the Bay Family Day is Sunday. Here’s what’s on tap

VIRGINIA BEACH — The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is inviting the community to its second annual Save the Bay Family Day on Sept. 9 at CBF’s Brock Environmental Center here.

The free event includes experiences aboard the education boat Jenny S, a scavenger hunt, face painting, fish bandana printing, and the opportunity to meet Mermaid Ariana, according to a CBF news release.

Hands-on educational opportunities include a large touch tank of live fish and critters from the nearby Lynnhaven River, a live bug display, and the chance to dissect a fish or oyster. Visitors will also enjoy local food trucks and oysters on a day made for the whole family.

“It was amazing how our first Save the Bay Family Day brought the community together to celebrate 50 years of saving the Bay last year. More than 1,300 people had a blast at Pleasure House Point on land and water,” said Erica Park, CBF Brock Center coordinator. “We hope that this year we see even more families eager to come have fun and create new memories while learning about saving the Bay.”

Guests can quench their thirst at the first-ever rainwater bar, which will serve cool, clear treated rainwater collected at the Brock Center—the first commercial building in the continental United States permitted to use rainfall for drinking water.

The rainwater bar will cut down on plastic waste by refilling souvenir cups and reusable water bottles.

The day also marks the return of a one-of-a-kind beer by Pleasure House Brewing made from Brock Center rainwater. Rain Barrel: A Bay Saver’s Brew is a limited edition CBF Bohemian Pilsner.

Save the Bay Family Day is from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at CBF’s Brock Environmental Center at 3663 Marlin Bay Drive in Virginia Beach.

Attendees are asked to RSVP in advance by visiting www.cbf.org/familyday.

Registration includes the option for a discounted CBF membership. Save the Bay Family Day is made possible by sponsor PRA Group, as well as beer sponsors Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company and Pleasure House Brewing.
