UPDATE Sept. 11: The first concert of the Ewell Concert Series is canceled for Sept. 14.
William & Mary is celebrating 100 years of educating women this fall with the Ewell Concert Series.
William & Mary became the first co-educational university in Virginia in the fall of 1918 when the college admitted 24 women as undergraduate students, according to a release from the college.
To commemorate that event, William & Mary is hosting a series of concerts featuring female artists and composers throughout the 2018-2019 season.
All of the concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the recital hall at Ewell Hall.
Laura Strickling and Joy Schreier will perform Sept. 14th to open the series. Strickling is a soprano who has performed with the American Liszt Society, the Brooklyn Art Song Society, the Richmond Symphony and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. Schreier is an accompanist from the Eastman School of Music.
On Oct. 28, internationally recognized Moroccan diva Aïcha Redouane and percussionist Habib Yammine will read traditional and original works based on Sufi poetry.
The David Dominique Ensemble will perform Nov. 9. Dominique, an assistant professor of music at William & Mary, and Victor Haskins, William and Mary’s instructor of jazz trumpet, will be playing music from Dominique’s new album “Mask.”
On March 14, Ensemble Schumann will perform. Ensemble Schumann is composed of oboist Thomas Gallent, violist Stever Larson and pianist Sally Pinkas. The group has been performing together since 2005 and has been featured at the Da Camera Series as well as other festivals.
The final show April 3 will feature an all-female quartet. The group is made up members of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra who will be performing the works of Fanny Mendelssohn, Amy Beach, and Germaine Tailleferre.
