Info on incident reports, outstanding warrants and arrests at your fingertips. Here’s how

NORFOLK — Police here have added three important new data sets to the city’s open data portal.

The first, on Norfolk Police incident reports, offers five years of data on events reported to police. Not all incidents reported are crimes; for example, police take reports on missing persons or on lost items. The data lists location to the 100 block, and excludes the names of victims and juveniles. This data is updated weekly, according to a news release from the city.

Active warrants dating back to April 1997 create the second data set.

Those warrants provide details on people wanted on criminal charges in Norfolk, and complement Norfolk Police Department’s “wanted persons” website.

As with all information on the portal, the warrants dataset can be sorted, searched or filtered. Warrants for active or sensitive investigations or for juveniles have been excluded. This dataset is updated daily.

Finally, Norfolk Police added the 24-hour arrest log to the portal, to show arrests made each day.

Sgt. Danielle Avery said Norfolk Police routinely provide this information to academic researchers seeking to identify crime trends or patterns. Now, this information is readily available by just a few clicks to all who seek it.

Those datasets join data on public safety, neighborhoods, code enforcement, economic development and parks and recreation on NorfolkOpenData.
