James City County Police are investigating an attempted break-in at the Toano General gun store after a person playing Pokémon Go witnessed the crime in progress.
Police responded to a call at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday that a break-in was in progress at the store at 7960 Richmond Road, police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.
The caller, who had been playing Pokémon Go on their phone nearby, said they saw “approximately” four males wearing hooded sweatshirts and gloves, Williams said.
While en route to the store, dispatchers told police they could hear shots being fired in the background as the caller was on the phone.
Officers arrived on scene, but could not find any suspects or vehicles in the area.
Williams said officers found multiple bullet holes in the front of the business. One of the store’s glass doors was also shattered.
There was no evidence to indicate anyone was able to get into the building.
The incident remains under investigation.
