The two top women’s tennis coaches at William & Mary have resigned, according to the university.
Both head coach Tyler Thomson and associate head coach Jesse Medvene-Collins are leaving W&M for other programs, the university said in a news release.
Thomson is departing W&M after six years to become the assistant head coach for women’s tennis at the University of North Carolina, the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion.
Medvene-Collins is leaving for a position with the Big 12’s Texas Tech, which boasts a top-25 women’s tennis team.
W&M will immediately begin a nationwide search for Thomson’s successor. No timetable has been set for hiring his replacement.
W&M won the Colonial Athletic Association women’s tennis championship in five of Thomson’s six seasons with the Tribe. His teams also advanced to the NCAA tournament on five occasions, including each of the last four years.
During his tenure at W&M, Thomson posted an 86-56 record. Under his direction, 21 players earned All-CAA honors in singles and nine doubles teams garnered All-CAA accolades. His players also earned five CAA player of the year awards and three CAA freshman of the year honors. During that span the program also earned five International Tennis Association All-Academic Team honors with 24 players receiving ITA scholar-athlete distinction.
Thomson was named W&M head women’s tennis coach on June 21, 2012. An assistant at W&M from 1997 to 2001, he spent 11 years as the head coach at the University of Minnesota. During his tenure at Minnesota, Thomson led the Golden Gophers to 111 victories, including the program’s first Big Ten regular season title in 2003.
