There’s a new replica of an 18th-century cannon along the edge of the York River.

The cannon, which is a replica of a cannon that was removed earlier from the waterfront for preservation, was placed at Riverwalk Landing by York County Public Works employees on Friday, the county said in a news release.

The replica is four-fifths the size of the original cannon, which can be seen at the Mariners Museum in Newport News. The original cannon was raised from the York River in the 1930s.

The cannon was dumped in the York River under the order of Gen. Charles Cornwallis during the Seige of Yorktown.

The replica is the result of 3D imaging of the original cannon that occurred last year, said Nancy Eason, a member of the cannon replication project at the Mariners’ Museum.

The current replica will be in place at the York River until a full-scale cannon can be created later this year.
