Take a run this Independence Day at the Yorktown battlefield

The Historic Triangle offers a variety of ways to celebrate history, and now runners have the opportunity to race for freedom.

The Yorktown Independence Day 8K and 5K Walk Run will be on July 4 and loop through the roads and trails of the Yorktown Battlefield, according to the event’s website. Both events begin and end near Surrender Field.

Runners and walkers are invited to participate in the 5K event, which is about 3.2 miles. Race day parking, packet pickup and registration will be at York High School.

The 8K race, which is about 5 miles, starts at 8 a.m.. The 5K starts 10 minutes later. Both races start on the Historical Tour Road.

Registration is $40 until race day, when it increases to $45. Registration before June 15 will guarantee a race T-shirt. XXL sized shirts will cost $2 extra. 

Early packet pickup will be fro 4:15 to 7:15 p.m. July 3 at the Yorktown Library, 8500 George Washington Memorial Highway. Race day packet pickup will be from 7 to 8 a.m. at at York High School, 9300 George Washington Memorial Highway.

The top three overall male and female finishers will receive awards, as will the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Runners must be present to receive and award.
