NORFOLK — The intersections of Northampton Boulevard and Military Highway will continue to be hampered by construction, says VDOT spokesman Dave Forster.
Construction on the Military Highway Continuous Flow Intersection will require detours at the intersection of Military Highway and Northampton Boulevard from 7 p.m. Friday, May 11 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 12.
During this work, eastbound and westbound traffic on East Princess Anne Road and Northampton Boulevard between Kempsville Road, Almeda Avenue and Kilmer Lane will be detoured.
Continuous flow intersections combine the addition of new lanes, new signals and new traffic management technology to increase capacity and reduce congestion.
As part of the design, left-turning vehicles will be moved away from the main intersection into dedicated turn lanes, eliminating conflicts with opposing traffic, according to VDOT’s website.
There will be no lane reductions on northbound or southbound Military Highway, but left turns at the intersection will be limited. Detour signs will direct traffic for those restricted movements.
Police will help direct traffic at several locations during peak travel times. Motorists should expect delays when traveling through the project corridor, VDOT said.
The Military CFI Project is scheduled for completion in late July. Construction work depends on weather and unexpected delays. Drivers are advised to plan their commute with VDOT’s free traffic information tools:
