VIRGINIA BEACH — The Office of Cultural Affairs will celebrate the completion of “Seashore Cathedral,” a mural by Giuseppe Percivati on Wednesday, May 2 at the Rudee Walkway on 4th Street.

The public can meet the artist at 5 p.m.; the unveiling will be at 5:15 p.m.

“Seashore Cathedral” is by Giuseppe Percivati (Pepe Gaka), an Italian street artist based in the U.S. and the Philippines.

He comes from a family of artists — his uncle and grandfather being painters, and father and sister musicians, according to a news release from the city.

His work can be seen in Italy, the UK, Japan, Pakistan, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

“Seashore Cathedral” uses a geometric style, giving the impression of stained glass. Each column features detailed vignettes that represent different aspects of the area that make Virginia Beach unique.

In the artist’s words, “I want to create the idea that the whole underpass, in the area of the columns, is made of stained glass, giving lightness and brightness to the atmosphere,” according to the news release.

On the back wall, Gaka pays homage to Paul DiPasquqle’s iconic statue, “King Neptune,” that can be seen at the 31st Street Neptune Park at the Oceanfront.
