NORFOLK  — The Virginia Zoo will be celebrating Earth Day on April 22 with a ‘Party for the Planet.’

The Zoo will be featuring some of the steps it takes every day to make a difference for the world, including a region-wide straw-free day and a Zoo-wide plastics challenge, according to a news release.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., businesses and organizations from around Hampton Roads will be present to share their expertise and resources about sustainable living within our communities. Topics include recycling, beekeeping, gardening, sustainable food and much more.

“There are many small ways to change your routine that will, in turn, help the earth and animals, like the ones you find at the Zoo,” said Greg Bockheim, executive director of the Virginia Zoo. “Party for the Planet is a great resource for ideas and activities that leave a lasting impression.”

Guests can discover what the Virginia Zoo is doing to conserve and protect wildlife while listening from Zoo Keepers and experienced Trail Hosts at 10 different animal exhibits, zoo officials said.

Two ZooLive! Stage presentations will give the audience an opportunity to meet exotic animal ambassadors up close. Crafts, games, a DJ and other activities will also be available in the Zoo’s Event Pavilion.

Guests will learn steps they can take to protect ecosystems, both locally and around the world, according to the news release.
