A dirty car will soon be the ticket to helping Williamsburg-area adults boost their literacy skills.
The Aktion Club Car Wash will help raise money to support The Arc of Greater Williamsburg’s Literacy Program, a partnership between William & Mary’s Pi Phi sorority and the Aktion Club, according to Sandy Layman, development & marketing coordinator for The Arc of Greater Williamsburg.
The 13th-annual car wash will be held between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at C&F Bank on Longhill Road, across from 7-Eleven. Twenty Arc clients will be washing cars, with volunteers present as well, Layman said.
The Aktion Club is a partnership between Kiwanis and the Arc of Greater Williamsburg. The program runs during the spring and fall, following the college’s academic calendar.
Money raised by the car wash will support weekly education and tutoring sessions presented by Pi Phi volunteers, who help teach literary skills to adult clients with learning disabilities. At the moment, there are 17 volunteers and clients, as the literacy program stresses one-on-one tutoring.
“We have 300 clients and many, many more would love to be a part of this, but it’s going to take awareness, time and money to grow the program,” Layman said.
The tutoring helps adults improve their reading, writing, reflection and comprehension skills, allowing them to read prescriptions, sign checks, fill out job descriptions and complete other tasks necessary to lead an independent life.
Layman said the Aktion Club is requesting donations of $5 or more from those who take their cars through the wash.
Last year’s car wash raised more than $700, Layman said.
