Rush hour commutes through James City County may soon be a bit smoother.
A construction project that will improve the intersection of Route 199 and Brookwood Drive will begin March 5, according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The project is scheduled to be completed in the middle of summer 2018. Henry S. Branscome, LLC was awarded the $358,000 construction contract for the project in November.
The aim of the project is to reduce traffic, improve safety and increase the intersection’s capacity.
Brookwood Drive will be widened, the median on Route 199 will be modified, and the intersection will receive a new signal head by project’s completion.
The extra pavement on Brookwood Drive will allow for a new right-hand turn lane and a lane that allows motorists to both turn left and go straight through the intersection. The existing dedicated left turn lane will remain.
Drainage will also be improved.
Single-lane overnight closures on Route 199 will be scheduled Sundays through Fridays, beginning the week of March 5. Lanes closures on Brookwood drive will also be scheduled as needed.
