Do you need a summer job?
Virginia State Parks may be looking for you. The state parks, which are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, need to hire about 1,000 workers to handle summer crowds, according to a release. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, an expected five million people will visit Virginia parks.
“Seasonal employees are the backbone of our operations and allow us to provide a wealth of outdoor recreation experiences for guests,” said Craig Seaver, director of Virginia State Parks.
Summer employees are needed to staff lifeguard shacks, snack bars and ranger fleets, according to the release. Seasonal jobs are available in all 37 state parks across Virginia.
There are also opportunities to work with AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps places thousands of young adults in service positions, where they learn work skills, earn money for education, and develop an appreciation for citizenship, according to the AmeriCorps website.
Those in the AmeriCorps program can work as park interpreters and recruits, as well as manage volunteers to improve park trails. These workers get a stipend and will qualify for an education award, according to the release.
There is also a multi-year paid summer internship program available to college students who are interested in becoming park rangers. To apply for one of these internships, visit Virginia State Parks online and submit an application before March 1.
Many seasonal park employees spend significant time working outdoors. Employees receive job-specific and customer-service training.
