In Williamsburg, there’s a new person to help balance the city’s books.
Barbara Dameron has been hired as the city’s new finance director, effective March 1, according to a city news release.
Dameron will replace former finance director Phil Serra following his retirement in December.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to serve as the City of Williamsburg’s next Finance Director,” said Dameron in the release. “I look forward to working with the City Manager, City Council, and staff to carry on the City’s legacy of responsible financial management and commitment to innovation and continual improvement.”
Dameron will receive a salary of $130,000 each year. She is currently serving as the interim chief financial officer for the City of Portsmouth.
Dameron has 25 years of accounting experience and 18 years of government finance and accounting experience, including previous work for the cities of Roanoke and Danville.
She has experience with budget, enterprise resource planning systems and implementation, grant management, purchasing, utility accounting, collections, real estate assessment, risk management and debt management.
Dameron is also a certified public accountant and a member of several governmental finance organizations. She has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from Averett College and a graduate certificate from the local government management program from Virginia Tech
“I am pleased that Barbara Dameron is joining the City of Williamsburg to build on an exceptional management team here in Williamsburg,” said City Manager Marvin Collins III in the release. “Her wealth of government experience, and ongoing work with state and national professional government finance organizations, provides the leadership expected for public service and fiscal strength demonstrated by the City organization.”
