A 67-year-old man is facing an animal cruelty charge for allegedly stabbing a dog after it bit him twice, police say.

James City County Police arrested Harry Lynn Johnston Dec. 6 and charged him with animal cruelty, a Class 1 misdemeanor, according to police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams.

Police were called to a home in the 7900 block of Mathew Court around 4 p.m. Nov. 30 after the female pit bull/lab mix was stabbed, Williams said.

Police believe the dog’s owner and Johnston, a relative, were arguing when the dog bit Johnston’s hand. The dog also bit the 67-year-old a second time on the calf, according to police.

During the argument, the woman pushed Johnston away from her, Williams said.

After the dog bit Johnson, the owner put it in a separate room. After being separated, Johnston got a knife, entered the room and allegedly stabbed the dog in the side.

The dog was taken to a local vet where it underwent surgery for a fractured rib. It was released several days later and seized by animal control. Williams said a judge will determine whether the dog is returned to its owner.

The man has “visible” injuries from the dog bites, which broke the skin, but declined medical attention. Police advised him to seek medical treatment, Williams said.

Police obtained warrants for Johnston’s arrest on Dec. 4 and arrested him Dec. 6.

Johnston has been released on recognizance, according to court records.

Johnston is scheduled to appear in the Williamsburg-James City County General District Court at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 19.
