The Senior Center of York is offering a variety of new activities for those older than 55 and looking for fun, according to a senior center news release.
The activities are aimed at individuals and spouses looking to learn, volunteer, or just spread a little holiday cheer, the release said. Events include a Christmas luncheon, a singalong at Seaford Elementary, an Alzheimer’s education program and more.
The first event will be the senior center Christmas luncheon at 11 a.m. Dec.1. The event will provide time with friends, food and music, according to the release. The cost is $4 as well as a canned food item donation for the York County Food Closet.
Following the luncheon, there will be a singalong at Seaford Elementary and a program about navigating Alzheimer’s on Dec. 5.
The singalong is a York senior center tradition where seniors are able to participate with the Seaford Elementary Choir and sing a variety of holiday tunes at 10:30 a.m., the release said.
The navigating Alzheimer’s program is directed towards those who are living with or have a loved one affected by Alzheimer’s, the release said. With more than 5 million Americans experiencing Alzheimer’s, the center offers an educational program in response, the release said.
The 12:45 p.m. program will look at areas such as memory loss in daily lives, finding knowledgeable counsel and providing emotional support. Christine Warfel from the Alzheimer’s Association will be leading the program.
On Dec. 13, the center will host a culture day event called “The Land of the Rising Sun” at 1 p.m. The event will explore Japan through the observations of senior center patron and military veteran, Don Pipes.
On Dec. 15 at 1 p.m., the center will host the December Birthday Bash. The event will include karaoke as well as musical selections of over 100,000 songs, the release said. Individual and group performances are encouraged.
To finish up the year, a variety of events will continue throughout the month of December including the Senior Center Craft Exhibit at the Gallery at York Hall, the canned goods collection and the weekly computer lab.
In January, the center will host the event “A Hidden Figure.” This program will include stories and experiences from Dr. Christine Darden, the first African-American woman at the NASA Langley Research Center to be promoted to senior executive service.
The center, located at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway, is known to host more than 19,000 patron visits in the past year, the senior center website said. Citizens who visit participate in programs involving culture, health, social and educational benefits.
