Three teenage boys were involved in a car crash after they allegedly led police on a chase from York County into Hampton in a stolen Jeep.
The occupants were taken to a local hospital following the crash, and the investigation has revealed the Jeep was stolen from Newport News, according to a York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office news release.
York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to Yorkshire Downs at 4:58 a.m. Tuesday for a report of suspicious people in the neighborhood, according to the release.
When deputies arrived, they noticed a dark-colored Jeep driving with its lights off. When the driver appeared to notice the deputy, it “sped away,” running a stop sign and turning onto Hampton Highway, the release said.
Deputies lost sight of the vehicle on Hampton Highway, but continued to look for it. When they reached Commander Sheppard Boulevard, they found the Jeep off the side of the road, the release said.
The vehicle, which had three teenagers inside, had crashed into a tree. Deputies notified Hampton Police, who worked the crash scene, the release said.
The incident is still under investigation.
