Teen found unconscious in court holding cell dies, police said

NORFOLK — A 17-year-old inmate found unconscious in a Norfolk courthouse holding cell died on Friday, police say.

Katrell Jaymar Washington was alone in the Norfolk Circuit Court holding cell when he was discovered unconscious around 11:05 a.m. on Thursday. Norfolk Sheriff’s Office deputies began to perform CPR on him, and at 11:10 a.m. paramedics were called to the scene.

Washington was waiting to appear for a hearing on four charges against him: two counts of malicious wounding, attempted malicious wounding and threatening a school employee.

He was arrested on April 26 in connection with an incident that happened at Maury High School on the same day, courts spokeswoman Amanda Howie wrote in an email.

Washington was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The medical examiner will work to determine how he died.
