There’s a carnival in town this weekend, but the amusements are a little different than you might expect.

Williamsburg Parks & Recreation will host the 2017 Canine Carnival Saturday at the dog park at Waller Mill Park, which promises to be a “tail-waggin’” good time, according to a city parks & recreation news release.

The carnival will run from 1-4 p.m. and include events such as a pet CPR demonstration, costume contests, a radar run, wiener dog races, free dog caricatures and food.

The Heritage Humane Society, which is located on Waller Mill Road, will also bring adoptable dogs to the carnival, the release said.

There will be two contests – a costume contest and dog/owner lookalike contest – and judging for them will begin promptly at 2:30 p.m., the release said.

The canine winners of the contest will win prizes from the Nautical Dog, a pet supply and gift store at 5104 Main Street in New Town.

The wiener dog races will be held in three heats: Little Links for dogs under 2 years old, Bratwurst for dogs ages 2 to 8, and Senior Schnitzel for dogs 9 years old and older.

Winners of the races will also receive prizes from the Nautical Dog.

Vendors will also be at the park selling pet products and offering other services.

The schedule of events is as follows:

  • Radar Run: 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
  • Dog CPR demonstration: 1:30 p.m.
  • Dog caricatures: 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
  • Costume contest: 2:30 p.m.
  • Owner/dog lookalike contest: 2:30 p.m.
  • Weiner dog races: 3:30 p.m.

Waller Mill Park is located at 901 Airport Road in Williamsburg.
