A message scrawled on a tree near the Williamsburg Transportation Center prompted a police investigation Friday.

Williamsburg police were called to the transportation center, located at 468 North Boundary Street, around 1:35 p.m. Friday after a maintenance worker reported a “racist message” written on a tree, said department spokesman Maj. Greg Riley.

The message “KKK was here” was written on the tree in dark-colored ink, Riley said. Maintenance workers removed the writing after it was reported, he added.

The vandalism case was still under investigation Monday afternoon, Riley said. There were no suspects at that time.

If the public has any information about the incident or any other crime in the Williamsburg area, they are asked to contact the Williamsburg Police Department at 757-220-2331 or contact Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
