One month after a dog was fatally injured at a Newport News kennel, the dog’s story received national attention on an afternoon talk show.
The Doctors, a weekday TV show that discusses health topics amongst a panel of doctors and other specialists, shared the 10-month-old Australian shepherd’s story on Thursday afternoon in a segment called “Dog Kennels: Dependable or Dangerous?”
On August 25, the dog named Fenway was taken to Coastal Dog Services for a weekend stay while his owners, Jessica and Jason Fox, went out of town for the weekend. Less than 24 hours later, the couple would receive a phone call from staff that their dog had been injured.
Though Fenway had stayed at the kennel previously, Jason Fox said they never had any reason to worry about Fenway’s care.
During the Thursday segment, show hosts recommended that pet owners should make unannounced visits to kennels before they bring their pet in for a stay. Kennels that use video cameras were also suggested.
“This is disturbing because you think if you take your dog to the kennel they’re in capable hands,” said Dr. Travis Stork during the show. “The fact that the kennel has no idea how this happened is frightening to me.”
