Officials: Drunk driving possible cause of fatal Oceana Boulevard crash

VIRGINIA BEACH — A driver who died when his SUV flipped on Oceana Boulevard may have been driving drunk, according to court documents.

Anthony Charles Tuck, 42, died after he crashed his SUV in the 100 block of Oceana Boulevard on Sept. 5, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.

The crash happened around 9:10 p.m. when Tuck was driving north on Oceana Boulevard and lost control of the car. Although the speed limit is 35 mph in that area, the Virginia Beach Police Department’s fatal crash team believes he was going faster than that, according to warrant documents filed in Virginia Beach Circuit Court.

Police believe Tuck over-corrected the SUV, crossing both northbound lanes before hitting a raised median and flipping the car. He was thrown from the SUV, hitting his head when he landed in a southbound lane of Oceana Boulevard near a curb, court documents state.

A Virginia Beach Police Officer who was in the ambulance with Tuck said he smelled a “strong odor of alcohol” coming from Tuck’s breath. When police went to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to investigate, medical staff gave them Tuck’s personal property, which included a plastic pill bottle with marijuana inside of it, according to court documents.

Police officers also collected the driver’s medical records from the hospital.
