The Virginia Capital Trail will soon be getting recapped.
A construction project to resurface 3.3 miles of the Virginia Capital Trail through James City County will begin the week of July 24, according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
“The maintenance and resurfacing of this path will ensure that the Trail remains safe, usable and accessible to visitors for years to come,” stated the release.
The Virginia Capital Trail is a pedestrian and bicycle trail which runs from Richmond into Jamestown and Williamsburg. According to the release, it was given its name because it connects the present capital of Virginia to the commonwealth’s past capitals.
The $373,000 construction contract was awarded to Blakemore Construction Corporation.
The resurfacing will be split into two phases. The first phase will see repaving of the trail along Route 5 between the Shellbank Creek wooden bridge and Brick Bat Road. Repaving of phase one will commence the week of July 24.
The second phase runs from Brick Bat Road to Chickahominy Riverfront Park, and will begin once phase one is completed.
During the project, the portion of the trail undergoing repaving will be closed, and trail users will be diverted on the adjacent road. VDOT cautions pedestrians and cyclists to use caution while sharing the road with motorists.
