Man arrested on gun, drug charges after reporting car stolen

A 68-year-old man was arrested on gun and drug charges after he reported to police his car had been stolen.

Sherrod Vaughn Jr. called James City County Police around noon July 5, reporting his car had been stolen by a woman who had stayed at his house the night before, police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.

When officers arrived at the house to investigate, they smelled a “strong odor” of marijuana, Williams said.

Vaughn’s car was missing from the house.

Inside the house, the officers found a rifle leaning against a wall that had the serial number shaved off, and a “small box” of marijuana, Williams said.

Police took Vaughn into custody at the house and charged him with possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number.

Vaughn was later released on bond, court records show.

The missing vehicle was located “a short time later” in Richmond, Williams said. Police are still investigating the missing car.
