Some relationships are destined to last a lifetime.
Wayne and Faye Gilbert were determined to make theirs one of those.
The childhood sweethearts met in the 1950s when the Gilbert family moved near the Frame family on Bonny Road in Princess Anne County. They went to school together but only occasionally talked.
In 1966, things changed. After ten years of on-again and off-again talk, they decided to make their acquaintance a relationship.
They became a couple.
On Friday, July 7, 1967, they were married at Victory Baptist Church in Norfolk. They honeymooned in North Carolina and made their home in Virginia Beach.
Over the years, the Gilberts endured the Vietnam War, job changes, a 30-year-ministry, and the daily ups and downs of life. But they say their 50-year-marriage is the result of a strong love for each other and their faith in God.
They had two children and grandchild who remain close. Faye says one of her joys is having her family around for Sunday and holiday dinners.
They believe being together with family is important because you should be with those you love.
They moved to Pungo in 1983 to allow their children to experience life in the “country.” And after years of open spaces and good friends, it is a move they have never regretted.
Wayne and Faye are excited about the next 50 years. They say they know if they keep living as they have, they will continue to be that lifetime couple.
Wayne Gilbert is a resident of Virginia Beach.
