Norfolk man dies after being hit by a car

NORFOLK—A Norfolk pedestrian died after being struck by a car Saturday night, police say.

Officers and fire-rescue were dispatched to the intersection of East 26th Street and Monticello Avenue around 9:45 p.m. in response to reports of a car accident, according to a release from the Norfolk Police Department.

At the scene, responders found Derek A. Vennie, 56, lying near the road and suffering from serious injuries, police say.

Vennie was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An initial investigation found that Vennie, who lived on the 2700 block of Church Street, was hit by a 2015 black Chevrolet Camaro as he was trying to cross the street near the intersection.

The driver was not injured and remained at the scene. According to the initial investigation, alcohol and speed were not a factor with the driver.

No charges have been filed against the driver, but police are urging anyone with information on the accident to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
