NORFOLK — After a week, 3,000 public submissions and votes from staff, the zoo’s newest female giraffe has a name.
The Virginia Zoo announced Friday that she’ll go by Iggy.
“We appreciate all the members of the community that participated in naming the baby,” Greg Bockheim, executive director said in a press release. “The zoo staff has been anxiously awaiting to call this baby giraffe by name.”
According to the release, Iggy was born with carpal laxity, a birth defect that affected the way she walked due to bent limbs.
“The calf has thrived in Imara’s care and is very strong. The vet staff and her keepers observed a huge improvement in her legs within the first weeks and her carpal laxity has now completely resolved.” Dr. Colleen Clabbers, zoo veterinarian said.
Now, the public can say hi to Iggy and the zoo’s other Masai giraffes Imara, Noel and Billy in the Africa-Okavango Delta area.
