Fire officials believe a lightning strike may have caused a fire in an air conditioning unit at the Williamsburg Fire Department Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters were out on a fire call around 4:15 p.m. when they received a report of a fire in a rooftop air conditioning unit at the station, according to a Williamsburg news release.
Fire units responded back to the fire department, located at 440 N. Boundary St., with mutual aid from both York County and James City County fire departments, the release said.
Most Williamsburg fire personnel were out on the other call when the fire started, according to fire officials.
The fire was under control within about 15 minutes.
The station sustained smoke and water damage, although the extent of the damage is still being assessed, the release said. The damage was contained to the station’s living quarters.
Both the City of Williamsburg and fire department are working to house the displaced personnel to other areas of the building, the release said.
The release said the fire service and response times will remain unaffected by the fire.
