Two people have been displaced following an attic fire at the Woods at Yorktown apartments in York County, according to fire officials.
York County emergency crews were dispatched to the apartment complex, located at 2801 Old Williamsburg Road, just after noon Tuesday for a report of the “smell of smoke” in the area, according a York Fire & Life Safety news release.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the eaves and roof area of one building, the release said. Further investigation revealed a fire in the attic area of one apartment and smoke in surrounding areas.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire and quickly extinguish it, the release said.
Each apartment unit had one resident who was displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to them, the release said.
Fire officials have determined a recessed lighting fixture in an apartment ceiling caused the fire, the release said.
Salvage and overhaul operations were completed by 2:45 p.m., and fire-rescue units from Naval Weapons Station Yorktown also assisted at the scene.
