NORFOLK — Could The Tide extend to the Naval Station Norfolk? A transit study is underway to see if there’s demand.

The public is invited to a meeting Thursday, June 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Lambert’s Point Community Center where representatives from the city and Hampton Roads Transit plan to answer questions about the Norfolk Westside Transit study.

The meeting will begin with a briefing, follow with a workshop and representatives will then field questions from the public.

The federally funded study began in April and is expected to take one year to complete.

The study aims to explore the possibility of extending the light rail system to Naval Station Norfolk, as well as weighing other options like bus rapid transit or streetcars, according to the study’s website.

The Federal Transit Administration asked HRT to identify a transit alternative on the city’s west side upon reviewing results from a 2015 transit study.

“Addressing mobility concerns to NSN, the largest naval base in the world, and the region’s largest employment center, is of vital regional interest,” the page states. “Of the roughly 60,000 to 70,000 people working at NSN and nearby facilities, over 30 percent of them live in Norfolk.”

While the Navy base is the main focus of the study, a potential transit extension could also connect other points of the city along the way, like Old Dominion University and Ghent.
