A Newport News man is facing felony drug charges after police say he accidentally fired a handgun in a Williamsburg hotel room stashed with narcotics.

According to Maj. Greg Riley of the Williamsburg Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Econo Lodge Hotel, located in the 400 block of Parkway Drive, around 6 p.m. Saturday for a report of a gunshot from a room.

When officers arrived, they discovered 56-year-old Charles John Pikulski of Newport News had accidentally fired a .45 caliber handgun while he was handling it.

Police obtained a search warrant for the room and discovered marijuana and cocaine during their search, Riley said.

Pikulski was arrested at the scene and transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, where he was charged with Reckless Handling of a Firearm, Discharging a Firearm in an Occupied Dwelling, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Cocaine.

No one was injured during the incident, Riley said.
