Fire crews cleaned up a roughly 30-gallon gasoline spill on Richmond Road near the KFC midday Wednesday after the driver of a garbage truck struck an object and punctured its fuel tank, police said.

No one was injured in the accident that occurred around 1 p.m., when the driver cut the corner pulling out of the KFC, striking something that damaged fuel tank, according to a statement from Maj. Greg Riley, Williamsburg police.

Williamsburg Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after to tackle the spill using absorbent booms and pads down to contain the spread until the chemical cleanup contractor arrived, said Fire Chief Pat Dent.

Approximately 30 gallons leaked onto the parking area and along the curbing on Richmond Road. The product was contained prior to reaching the storm drain, Dent said.

The incident snarled traffic, which was diverted temporarily during the clean up.

Police said the driver will not be charged because the accident happened on private property.
