VIRGINIA BEACH — What began as an effort to feed the hungry in the wake of Hurricane Matthew has transformed into a permanent project to “Extinguish Hunger” in Virginia Beach.
Beginning Thursday, Virginia Beach fire stations will accept donations for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Each station has a drop-off box located inside the front doors where people can drop off non-perishable items, formula, baby food, diapers and baby wipes, according to a VBFD news release.
Last year, the food bank distributed more than 18 million pounds of food across Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore. About 4,000 pounds of that came from the VBFD during the agency’s initial collection for Hurricane Matthew.
That food drive was so successful that the VBFD decided to turn it into a full-time project, dubbed “Extinguish Hunger,” Interim Virginia Beach Fire Chief Dave Hutcheson wrote in the release.
