A man who police say broke into a York Crossing subdivision townhouse and barricaded himself inside is facing several theft and gun-related charges.
Kyle Andrew Rhoades, 26, of York County, is charged with burglary, two counts of grand larceny, reckless handling of a firearm and possession and transportation of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a York County arrest report.
Police responded to a townhouse in the 100 block of Wethersfield Park at 11:42 p.m. on Nov. 9 after a house alarm was activated, said Lt. Dennis Ivey of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrived to find Rhoades running out of the home’s back door and into a fenced backyard, Ivey said. Before deputies could apprehend him, Rhoades ran back in the house and barricaded himself inside the home.
Deputies tried to negotiate for several hours, eventually determining Rhoades was in the attic. Police forced entry into the house, and were able to speak with Rhoades and remove him from the house around 7:46 a.m. the following morning.
“He was taken into custody without any problems,” Ivey said during a press conference Nov. 10. “He didn’t resist.”
Police evacuated several homes in the area around the house during the barricade situation and York Crossing school bus routes were temporarily suspended.
After apprehending Rhoades, police found several guns laying in the backyard, which Ivey said Rhoades attempted to steal from the residence.
Newport News and Hampton police assisted during the incident.
Rhoades has a lengthy criminal history, including drug and alcohol charges, larceny and destruction of property, according to York County General District Court and Circuit Court records online.
The charges extend back to 2008.
Most recently, Rhoades was found guilty of pick-pocketing in February, serving a four-day active sentence in jail, according to York County Circuit Court case records.
