The Yorktown Victory Center will host a milestone weekend of celebration on Oct. 15-16 as it formally adopts its new name – the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
The event will feature the debut of the film “Liberty Fever” in the museum’s 170-seat theater. Visitors also will be able to browse 22,000-square-feet of permanent exhibition galleries that highlight the tumult and drama of the American Revolution through period artifacts, dioramas, interactive exhibits and short films, including an experiential theater that transports visitors to the Siege of Yorktown with wind, smoke and the thunder of cannon fire, according to a museum news release.
The Oct. 15-16 debut of the museum’s new name occurs in conjunction with Yorktown Victory Celebration, an annual event marking the anniversary of America’s decisive 1781 Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown. During the weekend, visitors will have a first-time opportunity to explore the museum’s new indoor exhibits and outdoor military demonstrations, including performances of military music and artillery firings, a release states.
The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is the realization of a master plan adopted in 2007. Implementation of the plan, at an estimated cost of $50 million, led to the replacement of the original 1976 facility with an 80,000-square-foot museum that opened in March 2015, according to a release.
The new museum sits on a 22-acre site where construction continues on a new outdoor living-history Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm. A grand opening celebration will officially launch the new museum next March, a release states.
Located at 200 Water Street in Yorktown, the museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $9.75 for adults, $5.50 for children ages 6 through 12, and free to residents of York and James City counties and the City of Williamsburg, including College of William and Mary students who show proof of residency.
