Four Virginia Beach Police officers have received the highest award given by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police & Foundation.
The Award for Valor, as it is known, recognizes a law enforcement officer for “extraordinary heroism” in a situation involving an adversary and “imminent personal risk,” the Virginia Beach Police Department said in a Facebook post.
One of the four, Officer Bradley Colas, was given the award for “bravery and skilled response” in May 2015, when he stopped a man who had allegedly stolen cell phones and wallets at gunpoint.
Master Police Officers Edward Donohue, Paul Lynch and Brian Staub also received awards for their work in May 2015, when a man had been allegedly shot in the abdomen by a friend. The officers were able to “take the armed offender into custody without deadly force,” a release said.
The awards were given on Tuesday, Sept. 20 in Roanoke at a banquet where Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring spoke and presented awards.
The association gave 22 awards to Virginia law enforcement officers from six agencies.
