NORFOLK – A months-long resurfacing project for Terminal Boulevard will begin tonight, weather permitting, beginning a long stretch of weeknight and weekend closures, according to VDOT.
The work will begin on eastbound Terminal Boulevard — in the lanes heading toward I-564. That will require full weeknight and weekend closures of those eastbound lanes.
The closures will run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights and from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday on weekends. That work will continue every weeknight and weekend until it is finished in that direction. The work and associated closures will then switch to the westbound lanes.
Construction is expected to last until January, according to VDOT.
The work will be done by Virginia Paving, which was awarded a $5 million contract in May. A machine will be used to break up the old concrete into aggregate that will be reused as a base for the new road, which will receive a 6-inch asphalt overlay. The project will also add new curbs and gutters and replace guardrails and stormwater pipes.
VDOT provided the following information about the project:
- There will be no work on major holidays, and all lanes will be open during rush-hour periods.
- Traffic will be detoured using I-564/Admiral Taussig Boulevard and Hampton Boulevard.
- Neighborhood access will be maintained via Diven Street or Meredith Street during full closures.
- Access to Ruthven Road (Sewells Point Golf Course) will be maintained.
- All closures are weather dependent.
