Tidewater Community College is offering one-day courses on drones and their business potential.
The sessions will be held over the summer at TCC’s Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and Chesapeake campuses. They will cover aviation fundamentals, Federal Aviation Administration regulations, safety, insurance and more.
“We’ll go from the basic fundamentals in aviation to applied skill sets and training to how you might turn your hobby into a career,” the course’s instructor, Ret. Navy Capt. John Fristachi, said in a release.

Fristachi is a former F-14 pilot with nearly 35 years of experience in more than 30 aircraft types who once commanded the Navy’s largest jet training squadron, according to the release. His company, Airsight Global, has offered the same class at Eastern Shore Community College and Rappahannock Community College; this is the first time it is being held in South Hampton Roads, according to Emily Richardson of TCC’s Center for Workforce Solutions.
Anyone can register for the course. Owning a drone is not required to enroll. The cost is $165.
Each course is 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.:
- June 4 at the Virginia Beach Campus (Science Building JA 10)
- July 9 at the Chesapeake Campus (Academic Building, Room 4101)
- Aug. 6 at the Portsmouth Campus (Building B, Room 228).
