Williamsburg-James City County elementary schools celebrated National Read Across America Day Wednesday with guest readers and character parades.

National Read Across America Day encourages children to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.

Elected officials and community members visited several schools, including Matoaka, Matthew Whaley and Stonehouse elementary schools.

Members of the WJCC School Board and Superintendent Steven Constantino read books aloud to students and attended a character parade at Stonehouse.

College of William & Mary President Taylor Reveley stopped by Matthew Whaley and State Superintendent for Public Education Steven Staples visited Stonehouse, where he presented staff with a Read Across America Day certificate.

James River Elementary School also hosted a character parade in the afternoon.
