Applicants Sought for Powhatan WJCC School Board Seat

WJCC LogoThe Williamsburg-James City County School Board is seeking applicants who are interested in filling the soon-to-be vacated Powhatan seat.

Joe Fuentes, the current Powhatan representative, announced his resignation from the Board on Dec. 21.

In an email to fellow Board members, Fuentes wrote the commitments of his job as well as “several ongoing personal family and external obligations and issues” have made it “difficult to focus” in the past year.

His resignation is effective Jan. 15.

Fuentes was first elected to the School Board in 2005 and was re-elected in 2009 and 2013. His current term, which began in 2014, expires Dec. 31, 2017.

An eligible voter in the Powhatan district will be able to fill the seat as an interim Board member until an election is held in November.

Applicants should submit a cover letter and a resume to School Board Clerk Janet Cerza. Materials must be received by Jan. 27 and can be sent via email to janet.cerza@wjccschools.org, mailed to P. O. Box 8783, Williamsburg, Va., 23187, or hand-delivered to the WJCC Central Office at 117 Ironbound Road.

A public hearing will be held Feb. 2 to give residents an opportunity to speak to the Board about the candidates before members make an appointment. The board has 45 days after Fuentes steps down to appoint a successor.
